Hello Families,

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and is something that will not happen again for another 20 years. Pinellas County is not on the path to observe the total solar eclipse; however, we will still experience a partial solar eclipse, starting at 1:42 p.m. and ending at 4:14 p.m., with the peak occurring at 2:59 p.m. While the eclipse is an exciting event, students and staff can suffer severe injury if they view the eclipse without protective glasses.

To minimize risk of injury, DAS is taking the following measures
  • Starting at 1:30 classes, including PE, will be held indoors.
Families should be aware that students will have to be outside for a short time during dismissal and middle school transitions.  Please let your children know that the eclipse is potentially dangerous, and students should not look up at the sun at any point. Students should not look at the eclipse through a camera lens, including a cell phone, without a special solar filter.
